"Hammered & Stoned" is an eclectic group of metal artists who grew together as friends as we each matured in our art. We all share the joy of creation, and the joy in having others enjoy and appreciate our work. First and foremost we have fun. But, a very close second is our desire to create the finest art jewelry available anywhere.

Each H&S artists is a member of the Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild and lifelong learners continuing to attend art classes at Monterey Peninsula College, Cabrillo College, Hartnell College or various other workshops in Central California. We share techniques and new technologies among our group encouraging one another to achieve creative levels far beyond we thought possible.

Ed Kreps taught music and served as a school administrator for more than 30 years. He pours my energy into enriching himself through new venues. Music, sculpture, travel, and family have opened up a whole new world for him. Ed translates this into each piece and creates some of the most exciting wearable sculpture available anywhere.

Jewelry design is a relatively new passion for Joanne Ryder. She grew up on Long Island, New York, studied journalism in the Midwest, edited books in New York City, and now lives in California where she explores metalwork. She is a writer that enjoys “painting pictures with words” in more than 60 books for young people. She likes playing with words; but a few years ago, began playing with metal as well. Joanne now loves transforming metal into pieces of jewelry to wear and share, as much as she loves writing poetry and nature books. You will find traces of what she loves to do in each of these separate passions. She admires graceful lines, whether in text or in metal design. She loves a sense of joy and humor in both the stories and jewelry she creates, often using unusual materials, many textures, and different skills to make them. And all Joanne's work often expresses the natural world which brings her so much pleasure. Working with precious metal wire, glass enamels, and forming and texturing metal in her designs are some of the things she loves best.
Jody Royee is a multi-talented artist that includes photography, photo printing, painting, and of course, metal arts. Creating wearable art is a passion and a way to share my inspirations with other women. My work spans four key lines of interest:
Earth based topographic maps and ancient tribal symbols
Sacred Geometry, Architecture & Crop Circles
Fluid forming of
wrapped and folded metal
Playful musically inspired textures & spirals

Larry Probst's first experience with jewelry making was in the early 70’s but it wasn’t until the mid 90’s that it became more than a hobby. He was hired to do production work for a family business in the Caribbean. That experience in all the basics of jewelry making and in taking classes and workshops at the local community college has expanded his techniques and skills. He enjoys working with wax, forging, and the occasional stone setting of unusual things like fossilized sand-dollars, druzy quartz, coral branches and unique hard to find mineral specimens. He also enjoys textured/etched metalwork that has been oxidized for that ethnic look and prefers to make one-of-a-kind unusual pieces. Larry travels between Monterey and the Caribbean creating the best in handmade jewelry. His attention to detail and customer service make him a longtime Central Coast favorite of those who truly appreciate quality.

In 2004, Karen Pfeiffer struck out on a new path in her pursuit of lifelong learning, returning to college for classes in metal arts. She quickly fell in love with metal as a medium. Suddenly, she found a way to capture years of holding together a military family, of raising children, and of all the other handy dandy tricks she learned along the way. As a sometimes-single parent, Karen learned to do car repairs on the run, remodel an entire house, and throw together social events at a moment's notice. In her art, she fuses the practical and the beautiful. Metal and stone give her a way to uncover all the nooks and crannies of her life, to polish the facets and reflect in the light of day. Until now, Karen often felt that she missed so much of the art within her; she now realizes that life has given her a story worth sharing. With each piece Karen shares a little more of her story. Often a piece makes her a little embarrassed, or angry, or hurt, or relieved. She accepts these with the pride of ownership, knowing that this story, and this art, is is hers. Shari Seger brings bling, fun, and elegance together in each piece she designs. She is an avid jewelry collector, designer and maker, influenced and inspired by the many historical jewelry exhibits that she has visited throughout Europe, such as the Faberge exhibit in Russia, the Crown Jewels in London, England, and the jewelry in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection in London. Her fascination and love of beautiful antique jewelry compels her to create modern versions of the historical styles she loves. (Photo by Carol Holaday)
